a little more friendly competition
Want to know why small businesses are really good at creating value in new spaces and raising the bar in already established ones? They compete the right way.
Big companies compete by shifting numbers around. Cut a cubic inch off the packaging, automate a process to reduce employees, allocate funds to advertising for the highest margin products in your portfolio. This stuff is very important but it doesn’t create value.
When a big business competes with another big business they tell you how their stuff is better. Politics does a good job of leading by example. The Conservatives drum up this little diddy and the Liberals respond in kind.
Small businesses change the game. They don’t worry about being the better of two alternatives - they focus on being a new alternative with an entirely new set of benefits. There’s something about out-performing your competitors that is much more valuable to me, the consumer, than when businesses try to out-promote each other.
