bein’ too cool < you < tryin’ too hard
Here is a winning formula: bein’ too cool < you < tryin’ too hard
Here is how it works…
Bein’ too cool = Often times people want you to be impressed with the things they tell you. They want you to marvel at them and congratulate them or ask them how they did it. But have you ever met those people who expect you to do cartwheels while they sit back and nonchalantly tell you about this great thing they did?
“Yeah… I pretty much didn’t care if she said yes or not. Yeah… so… then she said yes and I ended up sleeping with a supermodel. It was alright I guess.”
Sorry pal, if your eyes aren’t bulging out of your head as you tell this story, then I’m definitely going to suck back my drewl.
Tryin’ too hard = These are the people that are going to tell you what they think you need to hear. Then they are going to tell you again. Once they’ve told you again, they are going to grab your shoulder and shake you and ask you if you “get it”. Assuming you don’t say “I get it” with a look similar to the one you’d get from discovering uranium, they will proceed to re-tell the story from the beginning with even more glamourous details than you were privileged to in the first rendition.
“Oh man… you gotta check this out. So I was at the club last night and I was on fire, you know, because of that book I got ‘The Game’. Yeah so anyway, you should see how great I am with women now! Dude, I slept with a supermodel last night without even trying. I knew she wouldn’t say no especially since I gave her a glimpse of my moves on the dance floor.”
At this stage I’m usually screaming “I get it” at the top of my lungs.
You = somewhere between ‘too cool’ and ‘tryin’ too hard’ is you being yourself. These are the conversations that win. When you talk to your best friends, you don’t embellish the story and you don’t pretend like it wasn’t a total shock either. You know damn well that what happened was a shock - that’s why you’re telling the story. You also know that you were a nervous wreck when it happened so why be extra smooth now?
See why Steve Jobs is more important to Apple than just the cool products he okays? BOOM!
