billable hours
I was talking to a friend the other day. He has his own small business successfully driven by his book, speaking engagements and sincere passion for what he does.
We’ve been talking about doing some work together for some time. I could have billed him already but, friendship aside, I make a point only to charge when value has been created or transferred.
He really likes this approach (and why wouldn’t he when our conversations are free). He then told me about someone he uses for advice in a different part of his business. She used to bill him when value happened. Now she bills him for every phone call as well.
We are all capped (as consultants) by the number of hours in a day. Raising your hourly rate (when you’ve earned the right to do so) is the only way to raise the ceiling. Sometimes twenty minutes spent advising a client on the phone can add up in the big picture. Sometimes (many times) my friend thinks of replacing her services with someone who bills per value-add.
I haven’t finished this thought, but I’d love to hear what other insights people can offer (aside from the usual arguments).
