entrepreneur + web 2.0… equally as obscure, equally as catchy
There’s something in the water these days and sure enough, people are starting to bottle it.
The definition of web 2.0 has been gawked at by many and simplified by others. The more “web 2.0″ businesses that emerge, the more we start to notice a pattern - interacting communities, user-generated content, the mashing of existing information, open source initiatives, web standards - the list goes on. Like anything else, it will take time and testing to determine the boundaries of this ever-so-catchy term.
The definition of an entrepreneur is someone who undertakes a new venture and subsequently assumes the inherent risks. In the last week, colleagues of mine at both Unilever and Microsoft have made comments on the sheer number of up-and-comers in their companies who’ve bolted for the life of an entrepreneur. Many of these entrepreneurial initiatives are inspired by this new web.
And so it begins. Slowly, we’ll all be entrepreneurs in some way, shape or form. Slowly, companies will wonder how they can keep these up-and-comers or if they are better off crowdsourcing and sticking to the one thing they do best - operational efficiency.
As the line between entrepreneur, intrapreneur, open source contributor, and prosumer becomes less and less clear - I wonder how long it will be before entrepreneurship 2.0 is the new soup du jour.
