facebook groups
My ‘keep Facebook to 10 minutes per day’ mantra is in jeopardy these days. Lately I’ve been running into a lot of exceptional concepts for Facebook Groups that are forcing me to “check in” on a several-times-over daily basis.
Like anything else, there is an evaluation period as to how time intensive/beneficial these groups can be. Here are some first impressions…
- I feel obligated as a social marketer to say that signing up to a group only to write a single wall post about what you’re selling, no matter how marketing related it is, is horrible community involvement and will hinder your image more than it will help.
- Having a website behind your group is a huge plus. Having a creative domain on your facebook group page that forwards to your corporate site is a huge minus.
- I still see a lot of “loudest voice wins” going on. People who plaster links everywhere have the right intentions but there needs to be a designated place for these things. The group’s discussion threads should be just that - discussions.
- The virality is incredible. Join one group and glance at the related groups. You could keep this up for a good 2 hours.
- I’m hoping that once facebook groups evolve with a bit more organization, I’ll be able to receive updates through email that match the tags I care to hear about.
I suppose that the current web has led us all down one of two routes when it comes to discussion boards, groups, etc. The first is “I have a problem”. The second is “I have a product/service”. There is a real lack of listening (for the most part) on behalf of these communities. I’m waiting for the problems to get more specific and the solutions to get much more concise. I’m also hoping to see if people will start to think about how they can serve the community as oppose to how the community can serve them.
