the gen y forgottens
I make a point to stay up to date with all the talk about Generation Y - how they’re a pain to manage, they expect the world, and how they have the talent to do great things. Many university students are taking a crack at their own companies right away, instead of waiting for a decade’s worth of experience. Corporations are adjusting their recruiting to become more participatory at the university level. But what of the high-schoolers?
Surely, if university students are taking on responsibility 10 years ahead of the previous generation, then the high school population must be ready to make their demands felt as well. If I were smart, I’d find as many opportunities as I could to speak at the high school level. I’d create competitions, breed innovation, and provide them the hands-on education that they will need as they enter the theoretical demands of an undergraduate education.
Is it too early to start dropping the “immature” stereotype from this demographic? Not sure. All I know is that an 11 year old girl taught me how to use a new technology the other day, and I was talking to her as though she were my equal (and so she is).

That’s a really interesting observation, and I think its got some real substance to it. We recently employed and are frequently using a high school student at Vdot Media, and like you said… an equal.
What technology did you learn the other day?
It isn’t news by some standards, but she was teaching me more about Meebo.
